The football team’s offseason program is transitioning into spring football. WTV’s Sid Iyer has more.

The football team put on pads for the start of spring practice with the hope that work put in now will pay off in the fall.

“I think there are two main goals in spring football,” offensive coordinator Matt Swinnea. “One is to evaluate the players. You have the opportunity for players to move up the depth chart, to show what they can do, to learn, and to improve. Secondly, it gives coaches a chance to evaluate scheme to figure out what needs to be added and what needs to be deleted.”

With, offensive line coach Trey Bandy leaving to focus on his swimming pool business, Aloha Pools, and offensive coordinator Wes Cowling moving to Austin to be close to family, the coaching staff hopes for a smooth transition.

Former defensive coordinator Swinea will take over the offense, while linebacker coach Brandon Gonzalez takes over for swinea as defensive coordinator.

“It gives coaches who are in new spots an opportunity to learn some things,” Swinnea. “Not just about how they want to communicate things but about how things fit with the scheme and how the scheme fits with the personnel.”
