Wingspan’s featured athlete for 2/1 is varsity wrestler, sophomore Natalie Chen (top).

Wingspan: When and why did you start wrestling?

Chen: “Because I was doing pull-ups freshman year I did 10 and Esther saw me, she came up to me, she said, Hey, you wanna join wrestling. And I was really bored, so I just tried something new.”

Wingspan: What’s your favorite part about wrestling?

Chen: “The togetherness that we have. I feel like we’re really tight as a team. It’s like a family.”

Wingspan: Who motivates you most and why?

Chen: “I’d say partly everyone around me because it gives me a reason to be here and a reason to keep going. You know, especially Coach Koons. I really like his inspirational talks because it gets me going.”

Wingspan: What are some injuries you’ve got from wrestling?

Chen: “I’m lucky to not really get any injuries or major ones, but I’ve had a concussion and I dislocated my arm.”

Wingspan: Who’s your biggest inspiration and why?

Chen: “My biggest inspiration would probably be our team Captain Taylor Clap, because she’s just everything I aspire to be. She’s a great person, a great leader, and amazing.”

Wingspan: Any thoughts on the district and how you think it’s gonna go?

Chen: “I think I’m gonna do really well. I’m gonna fight hard. There’s no telling what will happen, but hopefully we get through it.”

Wingspan: Do you have any wrestles that you copy after or you look up to?

Chen: “Every person I wrestle, I take a little bit from them. So like Esther, I use her head movement and it makes me look crazy. Taylor, I use her like her sort of defensive style. Lana, like her aggression. And Ace’s awareness, I take a little bit from everybody.”
