Wingspan’s featured athlete for 3/21 is varsity girls’ golfer, sophomore Olivia Murphy.

Wingspan: When and why did you start playing golf?

Murphy: “I started playing in the spring of last year.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite part about playing golf?

Murphy: “My favorite part about playing golf is probably being able to make friends on the team and being able to go out there and play.”

Wingspan: What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome playing golf and one that you still face?

Murphy: “Probably one of the biggest challenges was having to miss half the season because I play volleyball too so it’s hard having to miss the fall season and come back to play in the spring.”

Wingspan: Who is your biggest supporter?

Murphy: “My biggest supporters are my teammates because it’s fun being able to go out and play with them and also bond with them.”

Wingspan: How has golf impacted your life?

Murphy: “I got to go to regionals last year, so that was a cool experience. Also, I get to see how another sport works, which is cool because volleyball is a team sport and golf is kind of both individual but also a team sport. That is a fun aspect too.”

Wingspan: Is there anything you’re doing differently now in your spring season then you were in your fall season?

Murphy: “Now I’m doing lessons outside of practice. I didn’t do lessons last year. I have those once a week and they help me to understand how the game works better.”

Wingspan: Do you have a specific goal for this season?

Murphy: “My goal is probably to go back to regionals this year.”

Wingspan: What are your future plans for golf?

Murphy: “I plan to keep playing in high school and we’ll see where it goes in the future.”
