Wingspan’s featured athlete for 2/22 is varsity softball player, sophomore Sam Byrnes (bottom).

Wingspan: How long have you been playing softball?

Byrnes: “Since I was in elementary school.”

Wingspan: Why did you decide to play softball?

Byrnes: “At first, my mom made me, but then I ended up really liking it so I kept playing.”

Wingspan: What do you like most about the team?

Byrnes: “I love the people on the team, and how we can lock in and be serious when we need to but we can still have fun.”

Wingspan: How do you think the team will do this season?

Byrnes: “I think we’ll do pretty good. I think we could make it to round three of playoffs.”

Wingspan: What motivates you in a game?

Byrnes: “I think what motivates me is knowing that it’s a privilege to be playing and being out there on the field is a big thing for me, and being able to have fun.”

Wingspan: Who’s your biggest inspiration?

Byrnes: “Corey Seager is definitely my biggest inspiration. I got the opportunity to see him in a game once and it was pretty cool.”

Wingspan: How has the team been preparing for this season?

Byrnes: “We’ve been working very hard in practices in the morning and in the afternoon and we’ve gone over all of our skills and we’re ready for this season.”
