Wingspan’s featured athlete for 2/15 is varsity diver, freshman Zara Ahmed.

Wingspan: When and why did you first start diving?

Ahmed: “I started diving in 2022 because it had always interested me and it seemed like a great opportunity for my high school career and experience.”

Wingspan: Have you ever done any other sports?

Ahmed: “Yes, I was a gymnast for five years.”

Wingspan: What made you realize diving is what you wanted to do?

Ahmed: “I thought it was a great sport and I love the concept of the spring floors.” 

Wingspan: Where do you see yourself in the future with diving?

Ahmed: “I hope to see myself diving for the rest of my high school experience and hopefully get a scholarship so I can continue my journey.”

Wingspan: What has been the toughest part of training with varsity?

Ahmed: “The toughest part of training with varsity as a freshman is having to keep up with the upperclassmen and their habits since they are more advanced.”

Wingspan: Who is your biggest inspiration? 

Ahmed: “My biggest inspiration is my teammates and the effort and work they put into the team.”

Wingspan: Who has been your biggest supporter? 

Ahmed: “My biggest supporters have always been my team and coaches. They’ve pushed me to be who I am and to be the best version of myself.”

Wingspan: Even though you’re mostly solo, how does teamwork come into play with the rest of the Redhawks swim and dive team?

Ahmed: “We all score points with our dives for the swim team and we all encourage each other, we also do synchronized diving competitions so we work together to be in sync.”
