Current events are at the heart of an AP Lang and American Studies class project. Students pick a topic, and research it through different lenses such as politically, economically, and socially.
“Depending on if you’re in American Studies or AP lang, you’ll pick 4 to 6 current events based off of a topic that a lot of the kids got to choose, and then they will do a research question within their group and then divided up into different lenses,” American Studies and AP Lang teacher Ashley Harrison said. “So each student has a different lens to research for their overall broad topic.”
Students are getting to explore topics of their own choice, and research current events that interest them.
“I think it’s interesting,” junior Arpeet Nandi said. “I like that we get to choose our own topics, so we get to do something that we enjoy and are interested in.”
Beyond choosing their own topic, students also have creative freedom in how they present their research.
“Long term, it’s just good to know what’s going on around the world to make sure that they’re kind of being informed and they’re able to make their own kind of decisions based on seeing different perspectives of the same issue,” Harrison said.
