Orchestra fine tune their skills for UIL

Receiving their music in January, orchestra members have been practicing for their UIL performances held at Independence High School on Monday and Tuesday.

“We are in the height of our preparation for our state assessment which is UIL,” assistant orchestra director Madison Waggerman said. “Our students have been working on their music since January, they are super excited to go showcase all of their hard work. They’ve had their music since January, they’ve done sectionals, they’ve done extra rehearsals, it is a rigorous time.”

From sectionals to extra rehearsals, both students and directors have been putting in extra work to learn their pieces.

“Our group has worked so hard with our piece,” freshman Willian Whitehouse said. “We’ve constantly re-running the pieces over and over to make sure that the intonation is intact and that we show the judges in sight reading and regular performance that we are a great orchestra as a whole.”

Students such as freshman Kaylin Lee are excited for the opportunity to showcase their work.

“We have three pieces that we’re learning and we’ve been learning it since December and it’s just really exciting to see how things are gonna go in the competition,” Lee said. “Right now we’re like perfecting it like working on dynamics and like intonation and stuff and it’s just cool to see everything.”
