The football team wrapped up the spring season with an intrasquad scrimmage Thursday afternoon.

“When you’re trying to start a little bit of change in offense and new defensive coordinators, there’s always a little bit of a learning curve,” head football coach Chris Burtch said. “There’s some good things, the defense caused some turnovers, the offense scored some touchdowns. We got a lot of work to do still over the summer. Obviously when August rolls around we got a lot of work to do in two days. We were excited about it.”

The team went through a lot of changes on both sides of the field with the scrimmage giving them the opportunity to put a cap on the new skills.

“We threw a lot at them,” offensive coordinator Matt Swinnea said. “I think they wrapped their minds around a lot of the new stuff. [It gave] us the chance as coaches to go back, tweak a few things, add some stuff, [and] get rid of some stuff. They did a great job of understanding.”

Even though the spring season is over, the team still has lots of work to do to prepare for the 2016-2017 fall season.

“I don’t necessarily know if I’ve ever left spring feeling prepared. I’ve always felt like there’s a lot of work to do,” Burtch said. “To compare it to the other years, it’s probably where it has been. There’s still some question marks. Still some kids we need to get better. And there’s also some bright spots. So it’s probably about the same.”
