The Toyota Stadium that is hosting Thursday’s Homecoming game against Melissa will have a much different look in 2028 after the Frisco City Council voted 6-0 in favor of renovating the home of FC Dallas at a projected cost of $182 million.
“This stadium was built more than 20 years ago on an empty field which, at the time, seemed to be in the middle of nowhere,” Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney said in a news release. “Today, Toyota Stadium is synonymous with championships, marquee events, and youth development leagues not to mention being home to Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas. We embrace Toyota Stadium as an important part of our history, culture and economic success.”
The stadium’s renovation will be done in phases with the east side demolished and rebuilt followed by the west side. During the construction process the stadium’s capacity will be reduced from 19,096 to approximately 11,000.
“The centerpiece of the renovation is going to be the experience that our fans are going to have,” FC Dallas owner Dan Hunt said in a Dallas Morning News article. “The experience for the players will also be unique. These are professional athletes playing at an incredibly high level. They deserve a world-class venue; our fans deserve it.”
Toyota Stadium is one of Frisco ISD’s three home sites for various games, but one of the venue’s drawbacks for some people has been its lack of a roof or awning to provide protection from the weather. However, part of the renovation includes plans that will leave all seats covered.
“I’m really excited about the Toyota renovations. It’s going to give an overall change and I think it’s going to be pretty awesome once it’s done obviously,” psychology teacher Tim Johannes said. “Watching a game in the stadium will change quite a bit especially in the summertime. It will protect you from all the elements like the heat, wind, and rain. It will be cool for the kids that play football or soccer because they get to play in a really cool stadium that now has shade.”
