Spring may be far off, but Floral Design students are in full bloom as they gear up to kick off Rocky’s Roses.
“So, basically, Rocky’s Roses is where we make bouquets of flowers once a month for people that have subscribed to it,” officer, junior Gabriella Jurado said. “The money goes towards our floral department because, even though each student pays a due to be in this class, it’s still not enough to cover the whole year of flowers and garters and stuff like that.”
Rocky’s Roses works on a subscription basis, with interested individuals signing up for a yearly subscription and receiving flowers through in-school deliveries to students.
“A bunch of the Floral Design students will go ahead and make a bunch of floral arrangements and the people at our school, or teachers, students, parents, can go pay for the subscription and the flowers get given to your kids and you can take ‘em home,” sophomore Camila Villarreal said.
For many students, the experience of Rocky’s Roses allows them to directly connect the information and skills that they learn and develop in class to a real-world application and share it with others.
“We want to learn how to make the flower arrangements that we make presentable and open to the public,” Villarreal said. “So if people do want to have a job or they do want to learn about flowers or wanna do floral design, they can ultimately do that and this helps us with a lot of practice and getting to see what flowers we can use and which are the best.”
In addition, Rocky’s Roses allows parents, community members, and other subscribers to support school programs, like the Floral Design program, in unique ways, allowing both subscribers and students to reap its unique benefits.
“Well, we obviously are making bouquets, so we learn how to make bouquets in Floral Design and then in Rocky’s Roses, we get to further that experience,” Jurado said. “People that are subscribed to it, they get to help support the school and then they also get beautiful arrangements.”
Regardless of the benefits, though, in Villarreal’s opinion, the best part of this program is the different flowers students get exposure to.
“My favorite part is] probably the unique flowers that we get cause you’re not going to get it from the same person every time, so you see kind of their own flair on the flowers,” Villarreal said.
