The four day Memorial Day weekend was a prelude to summer vacation for many students as the school year winds down on Friday. But for several choir students, the long weekend meant competing in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest where each of the four students (junior Emily Swinnea, sophomore Andrea Cobos, freshman Rishab Nayar and freshman Jessica Gordon) received a score of 1, the highest score one can receive.

“This is a great testimony to the fact that they’re among the state’s best singers and so to be able to have those students here in our school, we can look at them and say they’re some of the very best in the state,” choir director Bruce Stevenson said.  “That’s a great honor for the school and the program.”

With all four students underclassmen, Stevenson hopes the state performances can help build a foundation.

“The individual performances it just shows the amount of work they put into it with their teachers and their practicing, and they are a great core of our program going forward,” Stevenson said. “We hope to build on what they’re done and have our successes as well.”
