Thoughts of graduation are dancing in the heads of many seniors and for those who hope to receive a service cord via the Frisco ISD Community Service Program, the deadline to complete and log their 100 hours of community service and volunteering must be entered on Xello by April 1.
“Students who volunteer 100 hours are eligible to wear a cord so they document that in Xello, if you go to the council Corona web page, there’s a community service tab or tile that explains how to log all the information, [and] how to check your information,” counselor Ryan Kiefer said.
“That’s where students will log it if they want to be eligible to wear the cord at graduation.”
Logging hours Xello can also be a helpful tool beyond receiving a service cord according to Kiefer. .
“For students, [Xello] is a good way to track how many hours that they’ve worked throughout their high school career because they might need it for college [and] they might need it for scholarships,” Kiefer said. “They could document it on their own in their own system if they wanted to but it’s just a backup way for them to document all those volunteer hours in case they need it for some sort of application.”
The privilege of obtaining a cord encouraged senior Angie Fei to actively volunteer, but is not the sole reason why she does it.
“I definitely think having the chance to get a cord does motivate me to volunteer more, but I don’t think it’s the main factor,” Fei said. “I volunteer and help out because it’s a great way to get out and meet new people that have different stories; it just makes me feel happy and in a way refreshes me.”
However, as the deadline approaches, Fei is concerned about whether or not she’ll meet the deadline but still keep an open mind to various volunteer opportunities.
“I think it’s definitely doable, but I’ve been so busy recently that I might not have time to reach it,” Fei said. “But then again, it’s the start of the most chill semester of senior year so I think I’ll definitely be able to volunteer more and hopefully meet the deadline.”
