Valentine’s Day may be right around the corner, but “love” is the last thing tennis fans are hoping to hear as the 2025 Dallas Open Tennis Tournament continues at the Ford Center through Sunday.
“Hosting sporting events is in our DNA here in Frisco,” Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney said in a CBS News article. “More events like this as we lead up to the World Cup and hosting the PGA Championship, will just continue to put us on the international stage… [W]e want to continue to host world-class events here in our community. This is just another feather in our cap.”
The Dallas Open presents a unique opportunity to Redhawk varsity tennis players.
“I’ll be attending the Dallas Open with the rest of my team [today],” senior Ahaan Sinha said. “So, we’ll be going at 6 p.m. and we’ll be watching, I believe, it’s the round of 8 – so it’s the top 8 players – so we’ll just be watching them.”
The most exciting part of the tournament for Sinha is getting to see all the different players in attendance.
“I’m probably most excited to see players like Shelton or players of that nature – y’know, those are like the top players in the US right now,” Sinha said. “There’s a lot of really interesting college tennis players also playing, so I’d be really interested to see how they do, especially since they’re coming up especially in like – as their first time being pro.”
But for freshman Ishaan Kalankar, the experience of watching the tournament was unlike any other.
“I already went [to the tournament on Sunday and it was] really fun,” Kalankar said. “It’s very different than other tennis tournaments because you can actually go onto the floor of the actual tennis courts and get to see players really up close. [I think my favorite part was] definitely going on one of the courts and getting a video of some of my favorite players.”
According to CBSNews.com, the tournament is projected to bring in a revenue boost of $1.5 to 2 million for the city, as well as prove to be an economic energy drink to hundreds of businesses in the area.
“We’ll be serving lunch and dinner, to thousands of people every day for the full nine days of the event,” Monarch Stag owner Derek Simms said to CBSNews.com. “Number four ranked Taylor Fritz is coming in. He’s doing a private party here. This is going to really, really help put us on the map. So, we’re excited about it.”
