From the putting green to the course, the varsity golf team is swinging into the season by visiting elementary schools with its first stop Friday at Anderson Elementary School.

Golf head coach Shannon Glidwell wants the new outreach program to help both his golfers and the elementary school students.

“We want our kids to realize that they’re role models,” Glidwell said. “I think it helps get them in front of younger kids to kind of show them a path they could choose. Hopefully we’ll go down there and the kids will see that the golfers are human and that they it maybe be someone they look up to.”

After visiting Anderson on Friday, the team will visit Isbell Elementary on Oct. 14. In addition to showing his team they are role models, the visits will also be used as a way to possibly recruit future golfers.

“The other part is to develop an interest in the golf program and in playing golf,” Glidwell said.  “Maybe it’s something they are interested in learning how to play golf or going to the golf course and learning how to play the game.”
