The girls’ basketball team is one of 33 teams competing at schools throughout the district in the FISD Tip-off Classic through Saturday.

“It’s still early in the season so it’s just preparing us for districts,” senior Rebecca Lescay said. “Besides the Frisco teams we are playing teams with great talent, which again is getting us ready for district and even beyond.”

Because it’s so early in the season, the tournament allows the team to notice things that may need to be worked on prior to district play.

“Early games, particularly in tournaments, expose your weaknesses,” head girls basketball coach Ross Reedy. “In fact, participating in a tournament can be frustrating in that we are unable to address some aspects of the game fully until we are finished for the entire weekend. This is a big reason why we made our schedule more open this year.”

The tournament helps the team learn how to quickly adapt to different styles of play.

“When you’re in a tournament we don’t have time to have a thorough scouting report, so we just have to get things done the way we know how to,” Lescay said. “Since it is still early in the season this tournament will really expose the things we will need to work on.”

Featuring Duncanville, the defending 6A state champion, the tournament is a good gauge for the team.

“We use this tournament as a measuring stick for our program,” Reedy said. “The FISD Tip-off Classic has become one of the premiere early tournaments in all of Texas. Thus, it’s an excellent way to see how we shape up against some of the state’s top talent. It also ensures that we are battle tested.”
