The terrorist attack in New York City on Oct. 31, 2017 was the deadliest terrorist attack in the city since Sept. 11, 2001. For social studies teacher Kenneth Schuimo, it hit close to home as his cousin Kevin McGinn is a NYC police officer and helped apprehend the suspect.

New York City saw its deadliest terror attack on Tuesday since the events of Sept. 11, 2001 when 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov killed eight people and injured dozens more after he rented a Home Depot truck and crashed into a bike path on Halloween.

Among the first responders was Kevin McGinn, cousin to football coach and U.S. History teacher Kenneth Schiumo.

“He was actually responding to a call of a suicidal teenager,” Schiumo said. “My cousin was inside, and then one of the traffic control guys ran inside and he said ‘everybody outside is dying’ and they were super confused so they ran outside of the house and they saw a school bus was in an accident.”

The suspect got out of the vehicle after crashing it, and held up a pellet gun and a paintball gun to further incite fear in those around the accident.

“If you listen to the radio transmission, my cousin was calling for backup but in the background you start hearing shots fired and things like that,” Schiumo said. “It was intense.”

NYPD officer Ryan Nash, took down the suspect in the middle of the chaos, while McGinn handled the arrest and confiscation of the weapons.

“He was radioing and calling for backup and in the meantime, his partner was running at the guy who was in the middle of the street,” Schiumo said. “His partner ended up being the guy that took down the terrorist he shot him in the stomach and my cousin rushed him and put him in cuffs and grabbed the mock weapons and had to secure the scene.”

McGinn and Nash have been humble about being called heroes, as they claim they were just doing their job.

“They had to take them to the hospital after to be checked out,” Schiumo said. “But I know he’s pretty shaken up about it.”
