A homecoming theme inspired by the Big Apple brought student council a big piece of the pie as this year’s dance was one of the most financially successful in the school’s history. More than $8000 was raised making this year’s dance, an “Empire State of Mind”, a success for student council.

“StuCo put in a lot of work. They came in Saturday at 8 a.m. to decorate the gym and make sure everything looked good,” student council adviser Jay Sommers said. “I am pretty happy with how homecoming turned out.”

The dance was one of the most profitable in school history as student council saved money by not hiring a professional decorator; spending weeks preparing decorations and organizing the event to make the night perfect.

“We started planning in May, we came up here a few times this summer, and started doing a poll once school started back,” Sommers said. “We had help from National Art Honor Society to make a taxi cab background and theater tech, who did an awesome job making a skyline for us.”

For a lot of students, it was important to make the most of homecoming by spending time with friends and dressing up.

“All my friends were going and it’s senior year so I was like I’m definitely going to go,” senior Reilly Martens said. “It’s my last chance and I wanted to make homecoming weekend memorable.”

It also provided the chance to showcase some school spirit.

“I think that if more people go, it brings the school together,” Martens said. “It’s nice to know that we’re all doing the same thing at the same time at our school.”
