Asexual Awareness week brings about recognition for those would fall in under the umbrella or in the spectrum of asexuality.

Asexual Awareness Week is held on the last full week in October every year. During this week, members and allies of the asexual community, those who have a persistent lack of sexual attraction toward any gender, educate about asexual people’s identities, advocate representation and visibility, and support other asexual people.

People who are asexual are included under the asexual umbrella and may identify as

  • Asexual
  • Demisexual: feel sexual attraction only after forming a strong emotional bond
  • Aromantic: lacking interest in romantic relationships
  • Greyromantic: experiences romantic attraction to a very minor degree
  • And more

Along with advocating representation and visibility, allies and members combat asexual erasure. Many people in the asexual community experience asexual erasure, in which the existence or legitimacy of asexual is questioned or denied. This could be due to the fact that asexual representation is nearly void in mainstream, western media.

Living in a hyper-sexual society can bring forth stereotypes of those who lack sexual and romantic attraction. Popular tropes display asexual people as uptight, awkward, desperate, serious, and cold-blooded. This erasure and misrepresentation can be harmful to people who are struggling to find self-acceptance.
