In her revival of the weekly column, All Voices Matter, staff reporter Sydney Bishop offers her take on various social and cultural issues.

Sydney Bishop, Staff Reporter

As a Black woman who partakes in rap culture, it is very disheartening to see the amount of misogynoir perpetuated by many mainstream rappers, most of which being Black themselves. I’ve been forced to see so many of my ex-favorite rappers such as Chris Brown, A$AP Rocky, and several others in a completely different light for their colorist and anti-black lyrics and tendencies.

This is why I was so encouraged to see one of ny currently adored rappers, Jack Harlow, publicly advocating for a Black woman this past week.

Harlow posted a video depicting a Black woman being wrongfully assaulted by a police officer right outside of his concert on his public Instagram, and in his caption he voiced his spirited disapproval. He even stated that he would go to the lengths it took to have the officer fired.

This means so much to me and so many other Black women personally. Jack Harlow is a white man in an industry riddled with hate against Black women. The fact that he uses his platform to stand against our mistreatment publicly makes me proud to be one of his fans.

Jack Harlow set an example for the entire rap industry with his post last week. Black women are given constant reminders about how little value they have to many rappers and musicians today. It is uplifting to see someone finally standing against it.
