Candidate commercials, random political texts, signs saying to vote for this person or that person means it’s election time in the Lone Star state with early voting beginning on Monday and continuing to Feb. 25.

“I think that it’s important for all citizens to participate in our democratic process,” social studies department head Jeff Crowe said in a previous interview with Wingspan. “I think that if only a small percentage of people vote, then the people that are not having their voice heard are not gonna be represented as well. It’s the only power that citizens have to control what our elected representatives do.”

Among the races on the March 1 ballot are seven statewide seats with each party choosing its candidate for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, land commissioner, agriculture commissioner, comptroller, and one of three seats on the railroad commission.

In addition to these statewide races, there are many local contests as well.

While voting on election day must take place at a specific polling place, residents can vote at any early voting location in the county in which they are registered to vote.

“I think it’s important to voice your opinion through voting on who you want to be represented by, especially with previous elections with not many people voting some of us did not feel represented by who was elected,” senior Anika Patel said via text. “Now that I can vote I feel I can have a say in who I want running our state and country.”
