Junior swimmer makes state for third year in a row

Wingspan is back again, with the top five sports highlights of the 2021-2022 year.

Coming in at #4, one Redhawk, junior Maria Oushalkas, represents the Redhawks as the only swimmer to qualify for the UIL State Meet, making it her third year in a row to compete at state.

“I’m pretty proud of how much I’ve dropped in both events from the beginning of this season,” Oushalkas said. “Overall this has been a pretty successful year for me and I’ve achieved some goals I’ve been working on for years now.”

For head coach Nicholas Dion, this was an all-around successful year for all of his swimmers.

“You always have challenges and I think our guys and girls rose to a lot of those and made it to where they and I wanted to go,” Dion said. “I think Maria did well against the best the state has to offer. The goal is to always have your last swim be your best. Maria did a great job of competing hard.”
