Red beat blue on Tuesday when the Redhawks volleyball team swept the Rock Hill Blue Hawks and earned a 3-0 win.

“The team played awesome against Rock Hill last night, and we executed our game plan really well,” head coach Eighmy Dobbins said. “Offensively we were really strong last night. We were finding ways to score during long rallies which was a goal of ours going into the match.”

Scoring the last point of the game, junior Mary Jane McCurdy believes practices leading up to the game prepared them for the Blue Hawks.

“Our strength was our ability to end rallies quickly,” McCurdy said. “We worked on that all week and we did exactly what we practiced. We also did a good job of running plays that worked until they made adjustments because they kept getting us crucial points.”

After going 3-6 during the NISD Volleyball Classic, this game meant redemption for the team.

“Coming off of a hard tournament we were just hoping to get back into the groove of things and we really came to play and surpassed our expectations,” McCurdy said. “I was so happy with how it went.”

The large turnout from students and parents at the game motivated the team according to McCurdy.

“The student section made a huge difference in the game,” McCurdy said. “Having a loud crowd helps motivate and get the team really hype which is super important because volleyball is a game of errors.”

Playing in front of a home crowd at The Nest gave players such as junior Brooklyn Shelton a boost.

“The game was super exciting and we performed very well for it only being our second home game,” Shelton said. “The student section was very loud and added a lot of energy that helped us gain momentum.”
