Wrestling ends the year with mixed results

The wrestling teams battled Midlothian High School on Wednesday, with the boys losing 39-27 and the girls pulling out a 24-9 win.
“The duals on Wednesday went well,” co-head coach Arman Mansouri said. “The boys lost to a very tough and deep Midlothian team by 12 points. Our girls won the dual and won 3 out of the 5 matches wrestled. We had a very notable win with senior William Redden pinning a returning regional finalist.”
Ringing in the new year, the girls will head to Grapevine High School on Jan. 6 and the boys wrestle in the Men’s Coyote Duals on Jan. 7 at Heritage High School.
“Break is always tough because everyone has to be disciplined in staying active,” co-head coach Justin Koons said. “Whether that’s running, lifting weights, or simulated wrestling technique, it’s imperative that the team doesn’t stay sedentary. With the holidays, family, travel, etc. it almost makes it an impossible task. However, we have a couple opportunities for some open mat practices to get back in the grove and we will have a normal week of practice starting on the 2nd to get us ready for that weekend of the 6th and 7th.”
For senior Mercede Alvarez, the success against Midlothian gives the team motivation over winter break.
“The duel went really well for us girls and boys, both did really good and it was not very expected because Mudlothian is a good 6A school, but we did well overall,” Alvarez said. “Over break we are going to have optional practices where everyone is still going to go in and get a good workout.”
