Band students are preparing for band placement auditions on April 26. Students will perform a short technical and lyrical etude, as well as 12 major scales and a chromatic scale for their audition.

The library has been anything but quiet this week. A middle school orchestra competition being held on campus Monday and Tuesday meant the band had to find an alternative place to hold class.

“We have been very fortunate to have space to rehearse,” band director Jamie Weaver said. “We are very grateful to [school librarian Chelsea] Hamilton for allowing us to be in this spot.”

“Mr. Weaver reached out to me last week a couple of weeks ago asking if the band could use the library space to practice,” Hamilton said. “My philosophy in the library is that my office is mine, but the library itself belongs to students, classes, and teachers. If there are ways that I can adapt how my day is going to better serve my campus and my students, and my teachers, I’m absolutely going to do that. I do kind of have to warn the students that come in that are used to using the library as a quiet space.”

With the library in use by the band, library aide, senior Abby Walker, doubts how many quiet places students had access to Monday and Tuesday.

“There’s literally nowhere to go except maybe the office,” she said. “There’s the counselor’s office, and there’s also a little sitting area in the AP office. Most places aren’t quiet anymore.”

Fellow library aide, senior Catherine Boss, was able to find a quieter space in the library but still appreciates the music being played.

“The library aides have been hanging out in the workroom for most of the day just to kind of get away from the noise,” Boss said. “It’s a lot of sound in an enclosed space, but overall, it’s been nice to listen to them. We are happy to provide a space for them to practice while the competition is going on.”
