Frisco ISD homeowners could be in line for a tax break if current bills continue to work their way through the state house in Austin.

The first bill is a proposed property tax relief package valued at $16.5 billion.

Part of this comes from what would be an increase in the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $70,000.

“I think that property taxes have gone up with property values, so it is nice to have some relief from that,” psychology teacher Tim Johannes said. “Mine went up over a thousand dollars this year in taxes, so it’s growing at another expense, that’s for sure.”

Another bill, Senate Bill 4, seeks to cut school property tax rates.

While this could take money away from school districts, the state would help make up the difference with more than 5 billion dollars to school districts throughout the state.

Science teacher Joe Delarios thinks that as a homeowner, it’s a good thing to get some tax relief, but as an educator, it seems like money for education is just being allocated to where it once was.

“As a homeowner, it makes me happy to have some tax relief, but as an educator, it fills me with some dread,” Delarios said. “The governor has promised to put some of those billions to education. What most people forget is that the state took away billions from education a little over ten years ago. So, really, they are just giving some of the money back that they already took away from Texas schools ten years ago.”

The bill package has been passed in the state senate and now heads to the Texas house.

If the house approves the senate’s tax package, the final decision would be left in the hands of Texas voters by way of a constitutional amendment that would be included on the November ballot.
