Perfectly Productive: preventing burnout

As the end of March approaches, testing and the end of the school year is just around the corner. Studying for STAAR and AP tests can cause academic burnout. However, there are always ways to prevent this from happening so you can have a relaxing study session.

1- Simplify the task

Tackling multiple subjects is stressful and unproductive, so to focus on the topic you’re studying, simplify the task into smaller tasks. For example, instead of reading five chapters of your textbook, read just one (depending on how short or long the chapter is) and then take a short break. Doing this allows your brain to absorb the information more quickly.

2- Give yourself time off

Even when there’s work to complete, taking a break is necessary to prevent burnout. Let yourself have time off and reward yourself by doing things you love. For example, you can go outside, hang out with friends, or read.

3- Sleep

Sleep is necessary for your physical and mental health. Taking a nap helps retain information, leaving you more prepared for tests. According to CDC, teens need 8-10 hours of sleep each day to maximize brain efficiency.

4- Physical exercise

Lastly, make sure to exercise at least three times a week. Keeping your body healthy keeps your brain healthier and strong and prevents burnout while studying. Yoga, cardio, pilates, and any other form of exercise are essential for a stress-free life.

Studying can be difficult and stressful, but these tips help ease burnout and prevent discouragement. Remember to focus on the things that matter, and good luck!
