Finishing 3rd at the UIL 5A Region II meet, the girls’ cross country team is in Round Rock where they compete for the state championship on Friday. This year’s varsity team features senior Sydni Wilkins, sophomore Caitlyn Ruback, junior Sofia Golladay, junior Sophie Lopez, junior Aleyah Davila, senior Kayla Winter, junior Meghan DeShetler.

Last year, only two girls made it to state as individuals.

This year, the entire team made it.

“Going to state as a team this year is definitely going to be super exciting and fun,” senior Sydni Wilkins said. “I think we’re going to have a lot of fun in Round Rock and just make a lot of memories. Going to state as individuals last year was still super exciting and great, but I think having the whole team there and the environment is just going to make it be a lot more exciting.”

That’s a feeling sophomore Caitlyn Ruback is about to experience.

“Since it’s my first time going to state, I’m not necessarily expecting to PR because the course is really hard and hilly is what I’ve heard, so I’m just expecting to run my hardest,” Ruback said. “Going to state as a team, I feel really excited because since this is my first time going to state I’m really excited that I get to go with my team.”

Whether they are able to win or not, head coach Khera Vay wants the girls to run their best races.

“Goals at state obviously is just for the girls to go down there and be the very best version of themselves,” Vay said. “Our division is really tough with Lovejoy, Aledo, and both College Station schools so hopefully they can just go down there and run their very best races.”G

The Redhawks hope to win their first team state title tomorrow with the race beginning at 8:30 a.m.
