Guest contributor Zeynep Dalkir sits down with freshman Phoebe So (pictured left) to talk about her choir journey.

Name: Phoebe So
Grade: freshman
Years of experience: 4 Years

Wingspan: How did you discover your passion for singing?

So: “I’ve always loved to sing since I was little, but also my sister and both my parents loved to sing as well so I just followed along.”

Wingspan: What inspired you to join the choir at school?

So: “Actually choir was not my first choice for electives, but in 6th grade, I got put into the choir, which was my second choice instead of art. I decided to keep it for high school, and plan to continue to do it for the next four years.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite part of the choir?

So: “My favorite part of choir is probably being able to be in a group of people who love music as much as me, and to sing such cool harmonies with a bunch of different voices.”

Wingspan: Which singer inspires you the most?

So: “I love Gracie Abrams, Lana Del Ray, and Sabrina Carpenter! I love their style of voice, and I would love to be able to sing like them one day.”

Wingspan: Do you plan on pursuing a career in singing in the future? Why or why not?

So: “No, I don’t plan to have an actual career in singing, but I would definitely like to do singing or choirs as a side to my everyday life. I might minor in vocal performance and join a choir in college.”

Wingspan: What are some challenges about being in the choir?

So: “There aren’t many challenges about being in choir but some challenges are the amount of effort that you have to put into learning and perfecting music.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite piece of music in choir this year?

So: “My favorite piece that we’ve done this year has to be Flight, which we sang for all regions as well, but we were also able to perform at Winter Extravaganza with the orchestra.”

Wingspan: What keeps you interested in music/choir?

So: “Honestly just the crazy amount of different styles and cool voices you hear every day. Also, the community you get from the choir as well.”
