Staff reporter Nidhi Thomas sits down with freshman Jian Park to discuss her violin journey

Name: Jian Park

Grade: 9

Years of experience: 4

Wingspan: When did you start playing? Can you talk about that decision?

Park: “I started playing the violin in the middle of my 5th grade year. I chose the violin because many of my friends and family friends were playing it and it looked pretty cool. Also, the violin looked pretty.”

Wingspan: Do you have a favorite piece out of everything you´ve played over the years?

Park: “I really liked playing sleigh ride this year for the Winter Extravaganza  with the top orchestra and top band. It was a new experience for me and I had a lot of fun practicing and rehearsing for it as well as playing with my friends.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite part about playing your instrument?

Park: “The favorite part about playing my instrument is the melody we get. Violins usually receive the most melody so it is never boring and it is always interesting.”

Wingspan: What have been some challenges in playing your instrument?

Park: “I sometimes get into a serious slump. Like for example, after All Region ended, I did not want to practice my instrument at all. It was my brain nagging me that made me practice in the end.”

Wingspan: Is it ever challenging to juggle orchestra with your other activities?

Park: “It is sometimes challenging just because you need to put in like 90 minutes after school for it. When I have a lot of tests coming up, it is pretty hard to juggle with it but other than that, it is fine.”

Outside of school, she enjoys playing the piano, experimenting with her creative writing, and ranting to her journal about her apparently "very interesting life."
