Students in theatre one are taking on the challenge of turning Shakespeare plays into modern-day performances. Working in pairs, students are adapting the stories and performing them in front of their class. The project helps students better understand Shakespeare’s themes and language by making them more relatable to today’s world.
“In theatre class, we were given a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and had to change it from Shakespeare’s time to modern day,” freshman Huda Anikad said. “We updated the language and made it more relatable to today’s audience. After practicing, we performed our modern version in front of the class.”
Along the way, students are also building important skills like creativity, teamwork, and performance.
“We can translate Shakespeare’s old English into modern everyday language by first understanding what each line truly means including the emotions and intentions behind it,” sophomore Samhita Ujji said. “Then, we rewrite it using words people today would naturally use like the Gen Z slang, while still keeping the same message, tone and other important details.”
