Name: Sabah Fathima Abdul Kareem
Grade: Junior
Fine Art: Art 1 Advanced
Years of experience: six years
Wingspan: What inspired you to take on your art?
Kareem: “I got into art because it gives me a way to express myself without always needing words. Sometimes it’s easier to show emotions or ideas visually than explain them. Seeing other artists’ work also inspired me to want to improve and challenge myself. Over time, art became something I genuinely enjoy and use as a creative outlet.”
Wingspan: Do you have a role model for your art?
Kareem: “My role model is Hayao Miyazaki. I really admire how he creates imaginative worlds and tells meaningful stories through Studio Ghibli movies like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. His art feels emotional and detailed at the same time. Watching his films inspires me to be more creative and put more thought into my own work.”
Wingspan: What struggles do come up when doing your fine art?
Kareem: One of my biggest struggles is getting frustrated when my art doesn’t turn out the way I pictured it in my head. Long projects can be difficult because they require a lot of patience and focus. It’s also sometimes hard to balance art with schoolwork. When I feel stuck, it can affect my motivation.”
Wingspan: What is the best part of your fine art?
Kareem: “The best part of my fine art is when a piece goes from looking messy or unfinished to actually looking complete and put together. That moment feels really satisfying after all the effort. It reminds me why I enjoy creating art in the first place. Seeing the final result makes the frustration worth it.”
Wingspan: How much time do you spend on your art?
Kareem: “I usually spend a few hours each week working on my art, depending on my schedule. Some pieces take several days or even longer to finish. When I’m really focused, I can work for hours without realizing how much time has passed. It honestly depends on the project and my motivation.”
Wingspan: What is a work of art to you?
Kareem: “To me, a work of art is something that shows creativity, effort, and personal expression. It doesn’t need to be perfect to have meaning or value. Art can communicate emotions and ideas in a way words sometimes can’t. It represents the artist’s perspective and process.”
Wingspan: Is there a specific style of art you enjoy? Or even one you dislike?
Kareem: “I enjoy realistic art, but I also really like cartoon-style art. Being able to switch between the two keeps things interesting for me. I like experimenting depending on the project or mood. I don’t really dislike any style as long as the artwork looks finished and intentional.”
Wingspan: What role does art play in your future?
Kareem: “Art will always play an important role in my future. Even if it’s not my main career, it will always be something I enjoy and rely on as a creative outlet. Art helps me think differently and express myself in ways that feel natural. It’s something I plan to keep in my life long-term.”
