Used and abandoned books get a new start through a student-led book drive, hosted by the LHS book club that ends on Monday with students able to get one volunteer hour per book. Books can be of any genre as long it isn’t overly sexual or in an unreadable condition.
“The book drive is being organized to give students the opportunity to earn easy volunteer hours while donating to the people who can’t afford books themselves,” club officer, sophomore Talbiha Jahangir said. “It’s an easy source to get quick volunteer hours and you are able to help give people, who are less fortunate, a book.”
Freshman Catherine Mohanraj believes that donating books to the library is a good way to give back to the community.
“I think donating books is a very good idea because people who want to read books can read books because some people can’t afford to buy books,” Mohanraj said.
On the other hand, freshman Vayda Gomez sees this as an opportunity for worn and used books to be given new owners and a new beginning.
“A book drive could contribute to the community because we all probably have old books from when we were younger,” Gomez said. “And, instead of throwing them away, we could pass them on to the younger generations and let them enjoy the books.”
Students can donate books and gain volunteer hours by dropping off their books in the donation box located outside the library and scanning the QR code located above it.
