Being “basic” isn’t a bad thing.
In today’s society, having popular interests is commonly perceived as boring and can be frowned upon, but why is that?
Things are popular for a reason. A lot of people are desperate to have super niche interests, but in reality, there is nothing wrong with liking what’s popular.
Obviously, there is nothing wrong with having unique preferences, but I think the real issue lies with people who criticize popular interests. Why is it such a big deal that I like pop music and rom-coms? They gained popularity because they’re good…that’s kind of the point!
This also ties in with gatekeeping. Not everything needs to be “underground” for it to be good. If anything, I would want my favorite things to be more popular so other people can see how amazing they are! My personal favorite example of this is Gracie Abrams. I’ve been listening to her since her album Good Riddance, but I don’t get why people are determined to keep her music a secret–wouldn’t you want your favorite artists to be successful?
Another thing people forget is that having things that are considered to be basic allows for things to be unique. Without a standard of ordinary, there is no extraordinary.
The idea of being basic is over-hated. It doesn’t matter if the things you love are super popular or virtually unknown, as long as they bring you happiness!
