After two years of writing The Fresh Perspective and sharing everything study-related, I’ve decided it’s time to bring the column to a close. This decision was not easy, but after struggling repeatedly with inspiration, I felt it was necessary to move on to the next chapter—whatever that may look like.
For months, I’ve noticed the column hasn’t been getting the same care and creativity from me as it once did. It’s not because I’ve grown busier or lost interest in journalism, but I feel I’ve exhausted nearly every angle the column could take. I no longer know what to write about, and I believe stepping away is better than continuing without passion.
Of course, ending something I’ve worked on for two years is bittersweet. On one hand, it allows me to explore new projects I’m more excited about. On the other hand, it means leaving behind the column that first gave me a voice in journalism and helped me stand out as a writer.
I still remember my first year in journalism, when I discovered how much I thrived in opinion writing. Mr. Higgins, our teacher, entered me into UIL, where I won first place in the opinion category. That moment validated me as a writer and melted away my doubts about never belonging in journalism or any high school program, for that matter. So when my second year began, I immediately launched The Fresh Perspective, publishing an opinion piece every Monday we had school. Unfortunately, this column has become my anchor, but it is time to let it go.
Starting next week, I would love to jump on a new column/blog that will continue throughout my senior year, and although I do not know what it will be about yet, I have some ideas:
- Reviewing a movie a week
- A senior column
- High school hacks
- Travel blog
The Fresh Perspective will remain near and dear to my heart regardless of what I write about. To everyone who has read even one of my columns, thank you for sticking with me, and I wish you very happy studying.
