Vine no more

Vine, a popular social media app, will be shutting down.

The days are numbered for the once famous app, Vine as Twitter has announced it will be  shutting down the popular app in the coming months. While new content will no longer be an option, Vine will not be disappearing.

We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines,” the Vine Team said in a blog post. “We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.”

For senior Emily Starrett, it’s the end of an era.

“I will continue to watch Vines. Like, I will find a way,” Starrett said. “Whether it is on Youtube or Twitter. But Vine being gone will always be like a piece of me is gone.”

From the start, the app was a hit among teens because of the amount of contagious laughter it produced day after day, creating bonds between friends.

“I used to be super involved in making Vines, and remaking Vines. But now I just watch and quote them everyday,” Starrett said. “I love Vine because they always give me a good laugh and my friends and I love to quote them throughout the day. I liked making them because it allowed me to share my humor and people liked them.”

It’s unique approach to video sharing made Vine a creative outlet for millions.

Vine gives people a six second video of something funny or interesting, which I think is creative way of catching our generation’s attention,” Junior Kirsten Mallari said. “Sometimes, it’s more convenient to watch a few Vines than go through a 20 minute video.”

Although Vine will likely be missed by many, Mallari feels as only a phase, and that is can be easily replaced with the ingenuity of new video apps.

“Honestly, people on Instagram, Youtube, Snapchat, Twitter and new apps like musical.ly all give social media users another way to make short videos,” Mallari said. “ So, cutting off Vine would just be cutting off a phase of social media that can now be replaced.”
