While geometry is often associated with shapes, angles and formulas, students in geometry classes recently focused on a different kind of math: probability.
The unit introduced students to probabilities, or the likelihood that an event will occur, through interactive activities and games designed to make the concepts more engaging.
Geometry and pre-calculus teacher Kristen Tatum said probability plays an important role beyond the classroom because of how often people encounter data and uncertainty in everyday life.
“We teach probability to kids because we increasingly live in a data-driven world, and being able to be fluent in data and probability statistics is really important for the job market,” Tatum said. “A lot of life has uncertainty in it, which probability is all about, so being able to be fluent in the language of uncertainty is the foundation we’re trying to build.”
Freshman Max Brown said the interactive nature of the lessons made the unit enjoyable.
“I like learning about probabilities in geometry because we get to play a lot of games and they’re very fun,” Brown said.
