After Homecoming, Pink Out and Senior Night for fall sports, the season of pep rallies is basically over as there is only more scheduled for the rest of the school year. That’s not nearly enough as the school should have more pep rallies.

All of the school’s pep rallies are crammed into the first few months of school, and the rest of the year is left with no school spirit, except for random spirit weeks where we dress up according to themes. Maybe having all the pep rallies in the fall plays into the “back to school” vibe, but the rest of the year shouldn’t be without.

The school needs more pep rallies as they could be useful in building up excitement and attendance for big basketball games or other sports.

Some people are going to disagree with me, because they think the pep rallies we do have aren’t good. They may seem boring and uninteresting. Also, the school allows students to skip them and sit in the cafeteria further decreasing the levels of spirit at the rallies themselves.

However, if we plan more, we can find ways to make each one better than the last. We could probably even have polls for students to suggest what they’d want to see to make the pep rallies more fun. Hosting more rallies also gives our cheerleaders, band, and dance team more opportunities to improve and perform better than the last time. Also, if the administration stressed more importance on pep rallies, instead of letting students skip them, the rallies would be better and people would be more excited about them.

Another factor in the lack of pep rallies maybe the issue with fitting everyone in the gym. The school’s enrollment is the biggest in the district and not everybody can fit into the gym (which is partially why students are allowed to sit in the cafeteria). This year may be difficult, but with new attendance zones coming soon the issue of overflow will be alleviated leaving more room in the gym for every student.

Even though there are plans for another pep rally in the spring, just one more is not enough for the eight months between Pink Out and the end of the year. More pep rallies would really make the rest of the school year somewhat entertaining and less of a drag. We could have rallies coming back from Thanksgiving or winter breaks, or to celebrate the end of the semester or school year. Pep rallies are designed to encourage school spirit and sense of student community, making the Redhawk Nation stronger. Having only a few of them, and mostly in the fall, just isn’t enough.
