Leaving campus on Thursday seeking championship glory, the boys’ track team returned to campus on Saturday with the UIL 5A state title.

Pulling into the back of the school, family, friends, and other Redhawks were waiting for the team, the school’s first UIL state championship in boys athletics

“I think whenever you win a state championship in anything, in the state of Texas it is enormous,” Campus Athletic Coordinator Matt Swinnea said. “And the fact that this happened in track and capping off a year where you know we had so much uncertainty. Seasons were shortened and it kind of cultivates a great year for us and everything that’s happened with the Redhawks it just shows hard work, and teamwork, and competitive spirit can do.”

For head coach Chip Gregory, winning the state championship is an example of what can be done in Frisco ISD

“Probably the most surreal thing is when they tell you are the state champion and you don’t even believe it at first,” Gregory said. “I think, if anything it speaks to what FISD athletics have done over the years, given the kids opportunities to be successful, and I think it showed. And also just finding out that this is the first state championship ever for the boys in FISD history, so just that speaks volumes to what has been created, it speaks volumes on what Liberty track and field is, and the support that we have from our facility, our staff administration and definitely to the kids and everything that they do and with the support from their parents.”
