After seeing Disney’s new movie Encanto, I felt I had to talk about the soundtrack. As a Colombian it made me feel very connected to my home and my family. I loved the variety of singers that they had, both in the movie as characters and as just ones on the soundtrack. It made me very happy that they included Carlos Vives since he is one of the most influential singers in Colombia. I grew up listening to his music all the time, so hearing him on this soundtrack made me happy that he was getting more recognition internationally.

From the songs sung by characters my favorites were “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “The Family Madrigal,” and “Surface Pressure.” I definitely loved “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” the most out of all of them. Something about that song is so incredible that it makes you want to listen to it all the time. “Surface Pressure” is another song that carries a very deep meaning, especially given that it is about feeling like you are carrying a lot on your shoulders. Even if you feel you are strong, and everyone tells you that you are, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t feel your emotions.

Out of the non-character sung tracks, my favorites are “Dos Oruguitas” by Sebastian Yatra and “Colombia, Mi Encanto” by Carlos Vives. The lyrics in both songs are beautiful and make me feel like I am back home in Colombia with my family. “Dos Oruguitas” reminds me of the old song my mom used to sing to me when I was a little girl, “Pescadito de Plata” or ‘silverfish.’

“Colombia, Mi Encanto” is simply beautiful and patriotic because it expresses the love and pride Colombians feel for their land.

This movie was great, but the music was even better. I feel nothing but gratitude towards Lin-Manuel Miranda for creating something so beautiful for Colombia and its people.

Would you talk about Bruno?
