Despite starting off as a small artist, the chinese-icelandic jazz singer Laufey has become more and more popular with her “Bewitched” album, having sold out tickets at her Bewitched: The Goddess Tour. The Graming Winning artist graduated from Berklee of Music for cello and is a jazz musician, her music mixes beautiful cello and full orchestra melodies seamlessly with a swing-jazz flare. She even released a holiday album on Nov. 1 “A Very Laufey Holiday” with holiday favorites such as: Santa Baby and Winter Wonderland..
I really like Laufey’s music because it’s nothing like I’ve ever heard before. She has a deep and rich voice and will often play cello in her own songs, occasionally featuring Philharmonic orchestras, trumpets, and saxophones. Her music has a perfect blend of classical and jazz. Most of the time when I hear jazz it’s from the 40s, but she’s a young artist who’s growing popularity has certainly shined a light on jazz and classical music among young people.
I used to hate the original Santa Baby from 1953 because I thought it was really strange and annoying. However, Laufey’s Santa Baby song in the holiday cover album is catchy and delightful with endearing woodwind melodies. I really like her holiday album because I think she has the perfect voice for jazzy and cozy holiday songs.
Her most famous songs are “From the Start”, “Goddess”, “Falling behind” and many more. Her music has a warm bossanova feel and a catchy jazz beat. As someone who’s not super into jazz music, I’ve surprised myself with how much I enjoy her music. I used to think jazz music was boring elevator music; but after hearing her music, it really changed my perspective and broadened my musical taste.
If you’re looking for something laid back, jazzy, and catchy, Laufey is the artist for you.
