Twang. Pluck. Plink. Thump.
Sounds typically only heard in a band… until now. Students in Computer Science 3 are reaching past algorithms and practice problems to a new octave through the aid of music with a Guitar Hero lab.
Through Java, students are using code to mimic a guitar string’s vibrations and sounds.
Along with new coding concepts, this Guitar hero lab allows students to learn real-life application skills.
“I feel like it helps us build problem solving and creative thinking skills,” Awasthi said. “We learn how to apply the concepts that we learned to actually solve problems and to create this virtual guitar.”
For some students, like senior Aarush Behra, this lab not only helps them learn computer science concepts, but also further explore their personal interests.
“I’m a guitarist myself and since we’re simulating guitar sounds, it’s really cool to see that the same stuff that I play at home or I could do on an actual guitar can be simulated through a computer,” Behra said. “And it’s awesome. It’s just a really cool use of code.”
