Oh what a finish, senior wins school’s first state title in swimming
Senior Jiwoo Oh leads the boys’ team to top 10 finish
School records were broken and the school’s first individual state championship was crowned at the state swim meet Feb. 16-17 at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.
After missing the state meet in 2017 due to an illness, senior Jiwoo Oh made up for last year’s lost opportunity by coming from behind to narrowly win the state championship in the 100 yard breaststroke.
“I felt very relieved,” Oh said. “Because all my hardwork and dedication paid off and even though it was by .01 a win is a win.”
The boys’ 200 medley relay of Noah Rose, Oh, Justin Jung, and Jack Easton, also found success placing third overall, and reset their record they just set two weeks ago at the regional meet.
The boys’ 400 free relay including Justin Jung, Austin Urbine, Oh, and Jack Easton finished off the meet strong with an 8th place finish overall.
“I’m really excited about it,” head coach Emily Nightingale said. “They work so hard and they kept us on our toes during the race and they are good competitors, they are good athletes.”
Individually there were many other top finishes as Noah Rose placed 13th in the 200 individual medley, 16th in the 100 backstroke and Rishabh Kumar placed 19th in the 100 breaststroke.
Jack Easton placed 6th in the 50 free and 4th in the 100 backstroke. He also led off the 400 free relay and broke the 100 freestyle team record.
On the girls’ side, the 200 free relay featuring Hannah Nguyen, Lina Parks, Julia Cole, and Mallory Showalter placed 15th overall. The same four girls also competed in the 400 free relay and placed 14th, getting a personal best time on Friday and again on Saturday.
In just two events, the girls’ team finished in 42nd place while the boys’ team placed 7th overall.
“It was so cool for them to get the opportunity to be there,” Nightingale said. “Not only to be there but to get top 16, they swam so well and it was too awesome to be rewarded for their hard work by getting to go to state it was so awesome.”
