McCurdy earned the DFW Public School Volleyball Player of the Year Award on Dec. 6, after almost a week of voting. Nominated alongside only seven other players in Frisco ISD, this award meant a lot to Mary Jane and her supporters.

After nearly a week of voting, junior Mary Jane McCurdy earned the DFW Public School Volleyball Player of the Year Award

“It feels really good to win this award and get to be recognized,” Mary Jane said. “I was really excited and it ended at banquet so it was fun to win there. This award just gives me more motivation to keep working hard to achieve my goals. It’s really exciting to be given this and it makes me more excited to get into club season.”

This award was a major accomplishment for Mary Jane, being nominated alongside only seven other players in Frisco ISD.

“It’s awesome that one of our Redhawks got recognized as an elite player in DFW,” head volleyball coach Eighmy Dobbins said. “We are in a really talented, competitive area with lots of amazing athletes. There are lots of good school programs as well, so it’s really awesome that MJ and our school were recognized.”

The school, community, and Mary Jane’s family came together to vote, and Mary Jane ultimately secured the win with 26.51% of the votes.

“We were just excited for MJ when we realized the poll had closed and she had won,” mom Anissa McCurdy said. “Mostly because we think she deserves it. She works so hard and leads so well and has sacrificed quite a bit of both personal time and energy into volleyball. She asks for very little in return and so a bit of recognition is sometimes nice. It was also fun because her entire family has supported her in this situation. We had all come together and the process was actually fun. So we were excited and relieved when it was over.”

Mary Jane not only showed her leadership off the court, but also led District 10-5A with 608 kills and earned 498 digs.

“MJ won this award because of her ability to be successful at every aspect of the game,” Dobbins said. “She is really strong offensively and defensively and a very consistent player. She deserves this award because of her commitment to getting better and being the best player she can be for our team and program.”
