Taking on what many believe to be their rivals, Memorial, in their District 10-5A opener, the Redhawks defeated the Warriors 71-51 Friday.
“It was a nice measuring stick for us to see where we are right now,” head girls’ basketball coach Ross Reedy said. “Memorial is a team that will certainly be in a mix down the line. They are gonna be one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the region, and so it’s certainly just a checkpoint, being that it’s the middle of December, but it was certainly a good way to start district.”
With Memorial being a tough opponent in years past, junior Kathryn Murphy is pleased with the win giving her confidence for the future.
“Planning for Memorial was big, we had that week to gather ourselves together and prepare to beat them,” Murphy said. “So we came in with a strong plan, and I think we executed that well. It gives me hope for the future, and hope to continue on.”
Girls’ basketball will hit the court again Monday when they take on Centennial, hoping to build on momentum from Friday’s game. With little time to prepare, the girls will refer to previous knowledge and strategies on the team.
“Early in the year you do the best you can building your database, so there is a lot of things you can refer back to,” Reedy said. “Fortunately coming up this team, Centennial, we’ve had enough [and] seen enough games and teams that have done similar things. So we just kinda review, and reference some of the stuff we have already seen.”
