Guest contributor Reyna Gannamani sits down with sophomore Juhi Kashyap to discuss her artistic journey.

Name: Juhi Kashyap

Grade: sophomore

Wingspan: What motivated you to develop an interest in art?

Kashyap: “I feel like every little kid had some interest in art; we all drew and doodled as little kids, but for me it was something that stuck, and I kept practicing and doing it.”

Wingspan: Did anyone inspire you to have an interest in art and who is this person?

Kashyap: “My older sister (Tia) did art all through middle school, but eventually she sort of stopped, but that interest sort of transpired into me.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite art piece you have drawn/painted so far?

Kashyap: “My favorite art pieces that I have drawn are always the ones that I do for other people, like on birthday cards, I draw them or I will just surprise one of the drawings of them, stuff like that. That is what I find really motivating and inspiring.

Wingspan: When did you start doing art?

Kashyap: “I probably scribbled on the walls when I was very little, and then I kept on scribbling.”

Wingspan: What materials do you use for your art pieces?

Kashyap: “Most of the time, its like pen and pencils; I also like to use watercolors, gouache, and sometimes acrylics, but I also tried sculpting and knitting, but there are so many different art mediums, and they are all really fun.

Wingspan: What are your art work pieces mainly about?

Kashyap: “I really like technical stuff and like things you use really heavy, light, light and shadow work, as well as silly perspectives like something that is interesting to look at and deep in thought.

Wingspan: Are you going to use your artwork on your future job?

Kashyap: “I was inspired to be an architect, and architecture is like half engineering and half art, and we kind of refer to it as an art that people use more than something you paint or something that you hang up on the walls; it’s more something you use in your day-to-day life.”

Wingspan: Who is your favorite artist and why?

Kashyap: “I am a really big art history nerd, but I really like Artemisia Gentileschi. She is a woman who really uses light and shadow in an interesting way, and she also broke a lot of gender boundaries during her time period. She is really cool.
