Now that the football season is well underway, marching band season has come along with them. A new assistant band director, Kyle Foster, has arrived on campus. Graduating form
Sam Houston State University where he studied Music Education, Foster recently moved to the area with his wife and dog. Wingspan sat down with Kyle Foster to check in and to get to know him.
Wingspan: Why did you start teaching?
Foster: “I started teaching because, number one: I love music and I wanted to be involved with music later in life. Number two: I like helping students work towards a goal and improving and seeing growth in not only their musical development but their personal development. And I wanted to be a role model or someone they could look up to to help develop in that area.”
Wingspan: Why did you choose to direct band?
Foster: “I chose to direct band because as a student I thought band was more fun than core classes and so I kept through it and I liked playing my instrument. Band was the avenue to help me. So I wanted to focus on student improvement and helping students grow and band was the vehicle to do that. Where I had the most fun and where my skill set matched up well”
Wingspan: Why did you choose this campus?
Foster: “I chose this campus for a couple different reasons. Number one: my wife and I live in the area so we wanted to be closer to home for work. Number two: I have a lot of respect for the staff that is here at Liberty High school and I wanted to be part of that staff. And number three, I wanted to be a part of Frisco ISD and be a part of a great community of not only students but of staff and families around here”
Wingspan: What’s it like teaching marching band?
Foster: “Marching band is fun! It’s a lot of time but it’s cool to see a large group of students work towards a common goal because they don’t get [to do] that often in school.”
Wingspan: How’s teaching going so far?
Foster: “Teaching is going well. The students are improving daily which is awesome and the students are adapting to change quite well. I’m adapting to change as well from a different school district to this new school district so it’s going well on that end and the kids are doing a really good job. That’s what we’re doing so far.”
Wingspan: How do you like the campus so far?
Foster: “The campus is great! The administration and the people in the front office are very supportive of things we do here in the band. I get along great with my co-workers here and the atmosphere and climate of the school is really positive and really geared towards student growth, student improvement, and student success so it’s cool to be a part of that.”
Wingspan: Do you plan to stay for a while?
Foster: “I do plan to stay here for a while! Like I said we kind of live in the Frisco area so this is a chance for me to put down roots here in Frisco ISD and I plan to stay here for quite a while actually.”
