With the first month of school behind us, Jenni Walters is a new teacher settling into her new position, teaching Advanced Algebra 1 and Geometry this year. She graduated from Ohio Christian University in Circleville, Ohio and majored in Integrated Mathematics in AYA Education.
Wingspan: How did you get into teaching math?
Walters: “My grandpa was also a math teacher and inspired me to be one as well.”
Wingspan: What’s the best part about teaching math?
Walters: “The best part about teaching this subject is helping students who have always disliked math… to love it. Or students who have never thought of themselves as good at it… to have a successful year.”
Wingspan: What is your day like being a math teacher?
Walters: “My day looks like lots of coffee. My day goes by so fast. We are always doing something new and building upon prior knowledge, so I am busy all day.”
Wingspan: What’s the most difficult part of your job?
Walters: “The most difficult part of my job is trying to meet those that need extra help, while also challenging students that need more difficult content- all at the same time…in the same lesson.”
Wingspan: What was a significant moment in your career?
Walters: “The most significant moment in my career was moving to Ohio. I taught one year in Ohio, and making the switch to Texas was a huge gear change for me. Different standards, different state tests, and different students. It has been a super fun journey learning how it works here.”
Wingspan: How has your year been so far?
Walters: “My year has been fantastic so far. The staff is absolutely amazing and so supportive. The kids are awesome and always bring a smile to my face.”
Wingspan: If you had to give a piece of advice to a student, what would it be?
Walters: “If I had to give a piece of advice, I would say to choose good friends. Pick friends that work hard, are good people, and that you look up to. Pick friends that push you to be a better person.”
Wingspan: Moving away from your job as a teacher, how do you like to spend your weekends?
Walters: “I like to spend my weekends going thrift shopping, exploring new coffee shops, spending time with friends, and hanging out with my church family.”
Wingspan: What would your dream vacation be like?
Walters: “Banff National Park. I would love to get a cabin and spend a week or two hiking there. Checking out every coffee shop and reading books on the porch.”
