Wingspan: Why do you wrestle?
Chen: “I wrestle because I find peace in it and rather than being very straightforward it’s more creative, you get to decide how far you want to go, what you want to do. The team that I have is unmatched and our connection has truly shown me what it’s like to have a second family that supports you.”
Wingspan: What are you most looking forward to this season?
Chen: “I’m looking most forward to districts and seeing how well our girls team can perform together, hopefully placing top five as a team in points and doing individually well.”
Wingspan: What is your favorite part about wrestling?
Chen: “My favorite part about wrestling is how physically and mentally rigorous it is. It has shown me how to push myself as an athlete and person beyond what I thought was possible and has given me confidence over the years.”
Wingspan: Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
Chen: “My biggest inspiration is probably Taylor Clapp. She graduated two years ago but she has mentored, coached me and has also been an amazing friend. I look up to her when it comes to wrestling, her tenacity and kindness is unmatched.”
Wingspan: What do you like most about the team?
Chen: “I like how we can be so genuine around each other. Though we don’t have too many girls I feel like it makes our bond stronger especially since we see each other every day and spend so much time together. We build each other to be the best version of ourselves.”
Wingspan: What is your goal for this season?
Chen: “My goal for this season is to be a good example to our team and lead us as captain. I want to be able to always be there for my team, whether as a practice partner or coach so I can help others improve and achieve their personal goals to build a confident team.”
Wingspan: What is some advice you would give to your younger self?
Chen: “Don’t let anyone decide who you want to be, it’s all up to you.”
