Name: Deeksha Narasimhan
Grade: 12
Fine art: band
Years of experience: seven
Wingspan: When and why did you start playing your instrument?
Narasimhan: “I chose band in sixth grade because I wanted to try something new for once, as I didn’t have any prior experience with instruments. Additionally, I picked the flute not only because I found the tone to be pretty and angelic but also because it’s a very convenient instrument to carry around and travel with.”
Wingspan: What’s a favorite piece of yours and why?
Narasimhan: “I don’t have a specific favorite piece per se, but I tend to be drawn more to lyrical and flowy pieces as they aren’t as rigid as technique-oriented pieces. Additionally, it’s easier to have more musical interpretation on such pieces.
Wingspan: When it comes to music, who inspires you?
Narasimhan: “Some people who inspire me are both my lessons teacher and the duo, TwoSetViolin, as both of them motivate me to practice more and give helpful advice in memorable ways.”
Wingspan: When it comes to your journey with music in general, what is a favorite memory of yours?
Narasimhan: “My favorite memory when it comes to playing my instrument was performing in the BOA exhibition round, which was a showcase. This will be one of my favorite memories because it felt rewarding getting recognized for our collective hard work that we put into the season.”
Wingspan: What have you learned from playing your instrument for all these years?
Narasimhan: “During my time playing the flute, I’ve learned to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace making mistakes. When I practice, I also learned that discipline and intentionality yield better results and to trust the music-making process, even though it can feel brutal at times.”
