Tuesday marks the first day of early voting for the 2026 midterm primary elections.
What are primary and midterm elections?
Primary elections occur several months before the actual election in November and provide an opportunity for voters to select the candidate they wish to appear on the ballot for a given political party. In primary elections, candidates are typically running against members of their own party and vying for the nomination to be on the ballot for the election come November.
This year, the election in November will be a midterm in which all of the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate will be up for election/re-election, among other seats.
When and where will polls be open?
Early voting polls open Tuesday and will remain open through Feb. 27. Voters can visit the ballots at any one of around 36 locations across the country with polls open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Feb. 17 to Feb. 20, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 22, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the remaining days.
Election day is Tuesday, March 3.
